Pupils are story writing superheroes

Pupils from ‘outstanding’ independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor have had their writing skills recognised by the organisers of a national story-writing competition.

Year 1 youngsters at the co-educational Harrogate school entered their stories about Belmont Grosvenor’s own superhero Cherry Berry into the Young Writers’ Superhero Adventures creative writing competition, a UK-wide writing challenge.

And Belmont Grosvenor School’s Year 1 teacher Mrs Nicola Shillam was delighted when all her pupils’ adventure stories were picked from thousands of entries to appear in a special book due to be published later in the year.

The annual writing competition, co-ordinated by Young Writers, aims to encourage young people to engage in creative writing by challenging primary-school age children to write a story about a character with special powers.

Mrs Shillam dressed up as Belmont Grosvenor School superhero ‘Cherry Berry’ to fire her pupils’ imagination, complete with red wig and mask.

“To have ALL our Year 1 children chosen out of thousands of entries is wonderful news and a real honour for Belmont Grosvenor School and proves that our pupils’ creative writing skills are amongst some of the best in the country,” said Mrs Shillam.

The Young Writers’ Superhero Adventures – Creative Capers is due to be published in April and will be placed in the British Library and other libraries across the UK, as well as being on-sale in book shops.

At the same time, Young Writers will announce an overall competition winner who will win a £1000 cash prize for their school.

Belmont Grosvenor School and its Magic Tree Nursery, is based in 20-acres of grounds in Birstwith, just three miles from Harrogate.

The Young Writers’ competition is the latest in a string of successes for youngsters at Belmont Grosvenor School, which have included Year 4 gymnast Robert Kidd winning the chance to train alongside sporting elite and Head Girl Matilda Tasker appearing on stage in a production at Harrogate Theatre.
