Mayor of Harrogate pops into Belmont Grosvenor School
Pupils at ‘outstanding’ Harrogate prep school Belmont Grosvenor were given the chance to become Mayor for the morning when they welcomed a Very Important Person into school.
Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Nick Brown, was invited to visit co-educational prep school Belmont Grosvenor as part of the pupils’ learning project on local and national democracy.
After talking to youngsters in assembly, Coun Brown spent time with Belmont Grosvenor’s Student Council, and members of the Year 6 Leadership Team, including the school’s head boy and head girl.
They were able to ask questions about his role as Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, as well as put on his Mayoral robes and try on his Chains of Office!
Next month, Belmont Grosvenor’s Student Council and Year six pupils will be travelling down to London to visit the Houses of Parliament to learn more about national democracy.
Pam Dight, Deputy Head Teacher at Belmont Grosvenor School, said Coun Brown’s visit had been extremely informative and educational for all pupils from Reception to Year 6.
“We were delighted to welcome Coun Brown into our school and all our pupils learned an awful lot about local democracy, and the role of the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate,” said Mrs Dight.
“The question and answer session was a great success, with our children asking some insightful questions of our Mayor – then they were given the chance to try on his chains of office, robes and carry the Mace,” she said.
“It was a fascinating visit – and we are very grateful to Coun Brown for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and visit us,” she added.
