Belmont Grosvenor joins forces with Horticap to spread Christmas cheer

Youngsters at ‘outstanding’ Harrogate prep school Belmont Grosvenor have been getting into the Christmas spirit with the help of local charity Horticap.

Pupils in Years 3 and 5 at the co-educational prep school collected holly and ivy from their playground before enjoying a wreath-making workshop with staff an students from Bluecoat Woods Nursery in Harrogate.

Every year, Belmont Grosvenor School links up with Horticap to make Christmas wreaths for parents and to sell at the school fair.

Phil Airey, Operations Manager at Horticap on Otley Road, said he was delighted to come along to school.

“It is an annual tradition now, and we really enjoy working with everyone at Belmont Grosvenor. Our visit to the school coincides with the countdown to Christmas  - and we all start to feel very festive,” he said.

Horticap provides training, education and activities in horticulture for adults with learning difficulties.

The tie-up with Belmont Grosvenor School began a number of years ago after the school chose Horticap as its charity for the year, and staged a number of fund-raising events.

Now, Mr Airey and a group of students return to the school each December to run workshops with to year groups.

Pam Dight, Assistant Head Teacher at Belmont Grosvenor School said: “Pupils, staff and parent helpers threw themselves into the task and produced the most marvelous wreaths using holly and other natural resources from the school grounds. We love to see them all displayed and they really do form a festive backdrop to the start of our Christmas activities.”

Belmont Grosvenor School, and its Magic Tree Nursery, is set in 20-acres of grounds at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, Harrogate, and cares for children from three months to 11 years.
