SCHOOL TEAM QUALIFIES FOR POP LACROSSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
22nd June 2009
Pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School, Harrogate, are celebrating after qualifing for the Pop Lacrosse National Championships taking place later this month (June).
A team of eight children, four boys and four girls, will travel down to the University of Hertfordshire on June 14 to compete in the national finals against 19 other teams from schools across the country.
It is the fourth time the pop lacrosse team from Belmont Grosvenor School has qualified for the national finals of the sport – and PE teacher Gillian Furniss is hoping the U11 team will perform well.
“We are delighted to have qualified for the competition. It is the third year in a row that we have qualified, and our fourth trip down to the competition. The team is very much looking forward to taking part.
“Pop lacrosse is a very popular sport here at Belmont Grosvenor – it is a mixed sport and teaches children many of the skills needed to play regular lacrosse. We run an extremely popular pop lacrosse after-school club each week, that is really well attended,” she said.
Children at prep school Belmont Grosvenor, which is based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, have access to a wide range of sports and enjoy cricket, rounders, rugby, tennis and athletics, as well as swimming in the school’s indoor pool.
They regularly compete in matches and friendly competitions against other schools both locally and further afield. Earlier in the year, the school’s U-11 netball team scooped top honours in a regional netball competition hosted by Sedbergh School.
