North Yorkshire schoolgirl wins coveted Blue Peter badge

3rd October 2008

Little Hattie Beckett is a big Blue Peter fan.

Hattie BeckettIn fact the 11-year-old, who has been hooked on the twice-weekly BBC TV programme for the past five years, has ambitions to become one of the show’s future presenters.

And she’s certainly got the credentials!

Two years ago, Hattie, who lives in Franklin Square, Harrogate, won her first Blue Peter badge.

And now the Head Girl at Belmont Grosvenor School, an independent prep school on the outskirts of Harrogate, has just been awarded her Silver Blue Peter Badge – an honour handed out to just a small number of the hundreds of thousands of hopefuls who write and email the programme each year.

Hattie’s Silver Blue Peter badge was awarded to her after she made a life-sized model of a cat, created from toilet rolls and wool. She even made a life-like cat face for the front of the model.

The presenters of the show, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, liked the model so much they awarded her the Silver badge.

“I was so excited when I got home from school to find out I had won a Silver badge – it really is wonderful.

“I had sent off a whole load of artwork I had done at school to Blue Peter, as well as my model cat. Blue Peter said they particularly liked the cat model, and gave me the badge,”said Hattie, whose friends at Belmont Grosvenor, School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, are very envious of her two Blue Peter badges.

“The Show is just great – I really want to be a presenter. They get to do so many interesting things, go on great trips and expeditions – it would be a fantastic job,” she said.

But in the meantime Hattie is preparing for her next attempt at winning another Blue Peter badge – this time the Green eco badge. And after that, her aim is Gold!

Headteacher at Belmont Grosvenor School, Jane Merriman, said Hattie’s achievement  had been recognized at the school.

“She has done incredibly well to win these two badges from Blue Peter – she has brought them in to show everyone. Hattie is Head Girl this year too, which is an honour. We are very proud of her,” she said.

Tim Levell, Editor of Blue Peter, said: "We are delighted that Hattie has won her silver badge.  We love hearing from Blue Peter viewers, even more so when they tell us what they've been up to -- and Hattie's creative talents meant she richly deserved her silver Blue Peter badge."
