New Prep Library opens at BGS
6th March 2010
Children at a leading independent school on the outskirts of Harrogate snuggled up beside the fire with their teddy bears to hear tales from Yorkshire author and storyteller Penny Dolan.
To celebrate the opening of the new pre-prep library at Belmont Grosvenor School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, pupils from pre-reception to Year 2 enjoyed stories and activities by the fireside.
And to make their storytime session even more special, the youngsters were allowed to put on their dressing gowns and bring their teddy bears!
Penny Dolan, who lives in Harrogate, spent the morning at school running storytelling sessions and activities before officially opening the newly-refurbished pre-prep library at Belmont Grosvenor School.
Last year Belmont Grosvenor’s main library was re-opened by author Nicholas Allen following a £30,000 refurbishment.
This year, it is the turn of the school’s smaller pre-prep library, which, thanks to help from the school’s Parent Teacher Association, has been given a face-lift, complete with new books and shelving.
Pam Dight, Acting Deputy Head Teacher at Belmont Grosvenor School, said the new pre-prep library would be well used by the children.
“It is a colourful and vibrant working area, with lots of new books, and it is very appealing to the children.
“We thought it would be a nice idea to do the storytelling by the fireside as part of a celebration of the opening of the library – and the children have loved getting into their dressing gowns and bringing their teddies,” she said.
Penny Dolan has a long list of stories to her name, including The Tale of Rickety Hall, shortlisted for the 2001 Children’s Book Award, The Ghost of Able Mabel and many other picture books. Her latest book, A Boy Called Mouse, is due to be published later in the year.
