Easter Chicks raise funds for Young Carers

They come in all shapes and sizes – complete with their best bows, bonnets and school uniforms. But the dozens of knitted Easter chicks at Belmont Grosvenor School, on the outskirts of Harrogate, all have the same thing in common – they are helping raise money for young carers across the Harrogate district. Children at the independent prep school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, are being asked to buy one of the colourful Easter chicks, which come complete with a Cadbury’s Crème Egg inside, to raise money for Harrogate-based charity Carers’ Resouce . All money raised from the sale of the chicks-in-suits will help give young people who care for family members a break. During the past three years, pupils and parents at Belmont Grosvenor School have raised more than £12,000 for the Young Carers Team at Carers’ Resource, based in North Park Road, Harrogate. The money has allowed young carers to have a break and experience activities and outings other children take for granted. Charlie Brooksbank, Chairman of the PTA at Belmont Grosvenor School said she was delighted the school had once again chosen to support Carers’ Resource by selling eggs to pupils at the school’s Easter Disco. “The egg outfits have been created by a number of carers and supporters and even include chicks wearing the BGS school uniform! The PTA at Belmont Grosvenor enjoy a special relationship with Carers’ Resource having supported them at two previous fundraising balls,” she said. And she said this year’s Carnival Ball, planned for July 3, will also raise money for the charity. Anne Wells, Marketing and fundraising Coordinator at the Carers’ Resource said “Some of the chicks have really made us smile and we’ve even given some names. We appreciate all the hard work and imagination that has gone into making these and we wouldn’t have been able to make money from these chicks without the kind donation of chocolate eggs from Cadbury. “We were delighted when the PTA at Belmont Grosvenor School asked if they could have a chick for each pupil to sell at their Easter disco and we are so grateful to them for all that they do to raise funds to give outings and some fun to our young carers,” she said.
