Hockey Match Reports 2009-2010

U11 Hockey Tournament at St Mary’s Hall

On Wednesday 17th March, ten girls went to play in the St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst, Mini hockey tournament. Eight schools entered in all and they were divided into two pools of four. It is a very friendly tournament and the girls are given opportunity to play on Astroturf. We entered last year for the first time. Our first match was against Arnold. It took us a bit of time to settle down and although we had plenty of chances we did not manage to hit the ball between the posts. Arnold snatched a victory with one goal. Liverpool College were the next opponents, they

had some people who could hit the ball hard, but we proved to be the better team. We won 2-0. Our third opponents were Rossall with whom we shared winning the ‘Plate’ last year. They were the strongest team in our group. We were very happy to keep them to a 1-1 draw, we had settled down and were playing well. Unfortunately Zeyra had to be taken off with an injury in the first half of the second match and was unable to take any further part. We ended up third in our group. The top two teams went through to the semi-finals of the main competition and the other teams went through to the Plate semi-finals. We were in the stronger position because we had to play the 4th placed team from the other group, on the pitch that we had played the other three matches. We soon got into the swing of the game and we were beginning to look up to pass the ball and move into better positions. We created plenty of chances but found scoring difficult. We managed one goal but Sophia had a clean sheet in that game and we were in the final against Terra Nova (Cheshire). This game was end to end, Emma Tomlinson was playing a more defensive midfield position

and her long hard passes soon changed their attack into a chance for us. We took the lead early on. We conceded a few penalty corners but the defence were becoming more determined to keep the ball out. Late on in the second half we scored again and won the match 2-0. We had retained the ‘Plate’. This was a fantastic end to the hockey season.

With all the snow at the start of the year and the matches being cancelled it has proved to be an interesting but successful term.

Mini Hockey Tournament

On Friday 27th November, 2 girls from Y5 and 8 girls from Y6 went to play a hockey tournament at St Olave’s school in York. We started off by playing Cundall Manor—it was a tough game as Cundall were very good but we were determined to

stop them from scoring, but they were just too good and they won 1-0. Our second match was against Terrington and were also very good. We just couldn’t keep our sticks down and space out so they won 3-0. Our final match was against St Olave’s and we were so eager not to let them score and we didn’t! But they didn’t let us score either ans so the final score was 0-0. Well don to everyone who played. The man of the match was Sophia for being a great goalie.

U11 and U10 v Cundall Manor

On Wednesday 25th November, the Year 5 and 6 girls went to Cundall Manor to play hockey and netball. It was amazing that the fixture could be played when you consider all the water that was lying around. Cundall only have one netball court so we had to split up, the U11s played hockey first and the U10s played netball. This makes it very difficult for Mrs Furniss to see all the matches but with a quick jog up and down the hill she managed to catch half of all the games.

The U10s have made good progress in netball but were just a little bit slower around the court and Cundall soon got ahead. This did not stop us working hard and we made some good moves up the court showing that we can dodge and pass well. The U11s were having an equally tough game on the hockey pitch. Unfortunately we did not have a consistently good hit which meant a lot of running around. This running soon tired us out and we found that when we had made a good break we did not have sufficient numbers to finish the attack with a goal. The defence improved as the game went on but, on several occasions left the goalkeeper in a one on one situation, Cundall took advantage of this and scored three goals. After a quick changeover we started the second set of matches. The U10s started well and were determined to go and meet the ball after winning the tackle we found that we couldn’t always get it to the next player and we had to start again. We were trying hard to pass the ball and that will help us in the future, but again Cundall were the winning team. Meanwhile on the netball court there was another tough battle going on. We had taken the lead only to let them come back at us. We made some great interceptions but then did a silly pass. When we settled down into our game and started thinking about the things we could do well we began to play a good game. We are beginning to expect Emma King to intercept every ball in defence and Isobel is now getting used to having to change from defence into attack quickly. Annabelle is a key player moving the ball up the court and when Emma T remembers to hang back we soon change the opposition’s attack into a goal chance for us. We eventually won the match 8-4 the last quarter was not easy as it was getting dark.

U11 Hockey v Giggleswick

On Saturday girls from Years 3-6 joined forces to play Giggleswick at hockey. It is a real treat to play on Astroturfvand we were looking forward to the fixture. The weather forecast said it would rain and it was not wrong we were dripping wet at the final whistle. It took us a little while to settle down and quite often we were found out of position and we kept passing the ball straight back to them when we intercepted their passes. The best goal of the afternoon was scored by Annabelle who hit the ball hard from just inside the D. She had received a long hard pass from Emma Tomlinson who was well inside her own half. Unfortunately that was the only goal we scored and we let them score 2. Samantha made some good saves and the whole team played well and should be proud of their performance.

U11 and U10 Hockey v St Mary’s Hall (away)

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon the Under 11s and Under 10s went to St Mary’s Hall to play hockey. It was a coaching game so the teachers could stop the game and help us. The Under 11s go off to a good start where, on the other hand, the Under 10s were a bit late on starting and when they did start they just couldn’t score. The Under 11s were storming ahead and passing and controlling the ball nicely. We kept our sticks down which helped us getting past the opposition and scoring and also helped us by not letting St Mary’s Hall score. The final score was 14-0 for the U11s and 1-0 for the U10s (who had lots of missed chances) to BGS! Very well done to Emily Timmons for being great in defence. The teams did a fantastic job. Well done!

U9 Hockey v Terrington Hall and Read School (away)

On a cold and windy Friday the Under 9 hockey team played against Terrington Hall and Read School. Our first match was against Read School. Read started with the ball and attacked our goal but we were able to defend well. We eventually managed to get the ball out of our half and into Read’s D and Lucy managed to score. At half time the score was 1 – 0 to BGS. In the second half we almost scored again, but Read managed to defend their goal

well. At the final whistle the score was 1 – 0 to BGS. Our second match was against Terrington Hall. We knew this would be a much harder game as they had already beaten Read School. Terrington started with the ball and within the first minute they had scored a goal..!! Then they scored another goal very quickly to lead 2 - 0 . We then started to play much better and just before the half time whistle Lucy scored a goal. In the second half we started with the ball and took it into their D. Evelyn managed to score a goal to make the score 2 – 2. We continued to play well and Alicia then scored again to make the score 3 – 2 to BGS. We continued to play well and nearly scored another goal. Just before the whistle went for the end of the match, Terrington scored again to make the final score 3 – 3. Special mentions go to Evelyn Wright, Erica Markee and Evie Barnard who all played very well.
