BGS Award

The BGS Award is available for Year 6 pupils. It is designed to develop independence, life skills, teamwork and responsibility through exciting challenges. It will provide opportunities to develop skills or learn new ones and provides a valuable preparation for the next school. A badge and certificate will be awarded to those successful at Speech Day.

The award is divided into six sections, one of which will be completed each half term, in an order, which is sensitive to the work load and particular needs of individual pupils and the year group. The sections are as follows.

  • Service - helping people in the school or local community.
  • Independent living - a preparation for the future, which includes sections - food and clothes, in the home, life skills and well-being. This section is particularly diverse as participants may learn financial skills, about services to the home or build a bird box.
  • Safety - fire, water, walking, personal. This section will comprise of visits or specialist visitors who will share their expertise with us.
  • Skills - to develop or begin a hobby, skill or interest.
  • Physical – this may be fitness which will include some form of exercise, sport, or dance.
  • Expedition - planning and completing a journey. This will be undertaken in groups, after training and will involve visiting a place of interest and/or the theatre. Staff will be in attendance throughout the exercise for advice and in case of emergency.
