Languages
Here at BGS, we believe so strongly in the importance of teaching Modern Foreign Languages, that every child from Reception to Year 6 is given the opportunity to learn French.
In Reception and Year 1, children are taught French once a week. Wall displays of their work in French brighten the classroom walls, as do stimulating posters, which highlight important vocabulary, such as greetings, numbers and colours.
From Year 2 upwards, children are taught in a dedicated MFL classroom. The classroom displays aim to show a balance between children’s work MFL regalia to provide a stimulating “European” learning environment.
In key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) children have two French lessons a week. These involve plenty of conversational work, as well as use of the interactive whiteboard and other ICT tools. A recent initiative has been the implementation of a Year 6 Languages Carousel, which allows the children to use one MFL lesson each week to “sample” German, Italian and Spanish for a term each.
A Spanish club is run weekly during the morning break and is open to all children from Year 3 upwards.
